Three-Layer Defense to Reduce Risk

Layer 1: A Unique Password

Use a password that you do not reuse on any other service. A password exposed by one service can otherwise be tried against another account.

Follow TikTok’s current password requirements and use a reputable password manager to generate and store a long, unique password. Do not copy a password example from an article into a real account. TikTok’s current recommendations are maintained on its Account safety page.

Layer 2: 2FA on Your TikTok Account

TikTok currently lists phone, email, authenticator, and password as verification methods and instructs users to select at least two. An authenticator is useful because it does not depend on receiving an SMS, but no method makes phishing impossible.

Enable it: Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Security & permissions → 2-step verification. Choose at least two methods and follow the in-app setup instructions. These are the steps in TikTok’s official account-safety guidance.

After setup, TikTok can request a verification code when you sign in from a new or unfamiliar device. Keep your verified contact methods current and review trusted devices regularly.

Layer 3: 2FA on Your Email

The linked email can be part of TikTok’s password-reset and recovery flow. Protect it with a unique password and multifactor authentication so access to one service does not automatically expose the other.

Use your email provider’s official security settings to enable multifactor authentication. Prefer a phishing-resistant method when your provider supports one; CISA recommends phishing-resistant MFA for stronger protection.

Reset the password through TikTok

If you regain access, open Security & permissions → 2-step verification, choose at least two methods, and complete the prompts. This adds protection if a password is later exposed, but you must still watch for phishing.

Review linked services

If Account Access Is Being Handed Over

First check the platform rules and applicable law. Security settings do not make an account transfer compliant, prove ownership, or guarantee that access cannot later be disputed.

Never send a current verification code or password through chat. Any authorized handover should use the transaction’s documented workflow, replace contact and authentication methods through the service’s own settings, and verify that no unrecognized devices or linked services remain.
